Auger
Manufacture
For many years now Downs has owned and operated a successful Auger
manufacturing business.
In addition, some years ago we purchased the auger business of Aicheson
Industries, and with it the franchise for Mate Borers.
We currently manufacture a complete range of augers, from 50mm to 400mm
and with couplings to suit all common borers. Downs
augers are characterised by their robust construction,
manufactured from 6mm plate steel in the base, and 3mm plate steel for
the flighting.
In addition, we offer a range of auger cutters to suit the different
boring conditions typically encountered in New Zealand. These range
form the standard “hard faced” cutter, through to
cutters fitted with a complete facing of tungsten, or fitted with
tungsten cutting teeth.
In addition, we offer a “Rock Auger”. This is
fitted with two tungsten cutters and a cast steel shaft. With a
diameter of 42mm, it is well suited to drilling blasting holes, or for
inserting Waratahs. They come in 900mm and 1200mmm lengths.
Mate Borers
Mate Borers were the dominant brand of borer on the New Zealand market
in the 60s and 70s. They were either fitted with a 100cc Tecumseh
motor, or frequently were converted to operate with a chainsaw
powerhead.
There were two basic models of Mate, the Mate 85 fitted with an 85 mm
drive clutch, and a Mate 100 fitted with a 100mm drive clutch. Mate
Borers are still very popular today, principally due to
their robust construction and their excellent power and performance.
It is noticeable at the National Fielddays that many of the contestants
in the fencing competition continue to use a Mate borer. A wide range
of parts is still available for both models of Mate Borer.
